Mary Doria Russell’s Doc Holliday duology reimagines the life of John Henry Holliday, the dentist-turned-gambler who became famous for his friendship with Wyatt Earp and his role at the O.K. Corral. Doc (2011) covers Holliday’s early life and his relationship with Kate Harony, while Epitaph (2015) deals with the events in Tombstone.
Russell approached the material as a novelist rather than a historian, but she did years of research to get the details right. The result is a portrait of Holliday that goes beyond the popular image of a gunslinging gambler.
