The Disappearance of Charlotte Walters begins with The Last Real Girl, in which 17-year-old Reese attends a Halloween party hosted by her best friend Charlotte in the wealthy lakeside town of St. Clair. The party’s theme is “missing girls,” and by the end of the night, Charlotte herself has disappeared. Reese was the last person to see her alive, near the lake, and everyone who attended the party quickly becomes a suspect.
The trilogy follows Reese as she digs through the secrets of St. Clair’s privileged residents to find out what happened to Charlotte. Charlotte’s older brother, who argued with her earlier that evening, is among those under suspicion, along with a field hockey teammate who was not even invited. The Last Real Crime and The Last Real Secret continue the investigation, peeling back more of the town’s hidden history as the truth about Charlotte’s fate becomes harder to ignore.
