The Dinocalypse Trilogy by Chuck Wendig is a tie-in to Evil Hat Productions’ Spirit of the Century tabletop RPG setting. The books are set in the 1930s and follow the Century Club, a group of pulp heroes with extraordinary abilities, as they face an invasion of psychic dinosaurs in New York City. The tone is deliberately over-the-top, drawing on the tradition of old-fashioned adventure serials.
Dinocalypse Now (2012) kicks things off when dinosaurs appear out of nowhere during a celebration at the Empire State Building. The heroes are scattered, captured, or lost in time, and the sequel Beyond Dinocalypse (2013) picks up with the aftermath. The books are short, punchy reads that lean into the fun of their premise rather than trying to be taken seriously.
These were written as part of a Kickstarter-funded fiction line and represent one of Wendig’s earlier forays into licensed genre fiction, a type of work he would go on to do at a much larger scale with his Star Wars novels.
