The Danzig Trilogy (Die Danziger Trilogie) is Günter Grass’s most celebrated work. All three novels are set in and around the Free City of Danzig before, during, and after World War II. Each book uses a different narrator and perspective to examine German identity, guilt, and the destruction of a lost world.
“The Tin Drum” (1959) follows Oskar Matzerath, who stops growing at age three. “Cat and Mouse” (1961) centers on a schoolboy in wartime Danzig. “Dog Years” (1963) spans three decades through multiple voices. Together they form one of the major achievements of postwar European literature.
