Dianne Day’s standalone novels bookend her career. Obsidian (1987) and The Stone House (1989) were her first two published books, written before she found her niche in historical mystery with the Fremont Jones series. Cut to the Heart (2002) came later, after she had wrapped up the Jones books.
These three novels show a different side of Day’s writing from her series work. Without the historical San Francisco setting and a recurring detective, she had room to experiment with different kinds of suspense and different time periods. Readers who enjoy Day’s careful plotting in the Fremont Jones books will find the same attention to structure here, applied to standalone stories that each have their own flavor.
