Destiny’s Dreamers is a short series of two children’s historical novels published in the early 1990s. Kathleen Karr wrote both books around the experience of heading west during America’s era of frontier expansion, a subject she returned to several times throughout her career (including in the later Petticoat Party series).
Gone West (1993) introduces readers to a family setting out for a new life beyond the settled states. The Promised Land (1994) picks up the theme of arrival and the hard work of building something from nothing in unfamiliar territory. The books are aimed at middle-grade readers and reflect Karr’s lifelong interest in the people who shaped the American West.
