The Deirdre Quinn Nightingale series takes the Lydia Adamson mystery formula to the countryside. Dr. Nightingale — Didi to her friends — is a veterinarian in rural upstate New York whose house calls bring her face to face with crimes involving horses, pigs, bears, and other creatures. Each title references a different animal, from Dr. Nightingale Rides the Elephant to Dr. Nightingale Chases Three Little Pigs.
The 12-book series ran from 1994 to 2001 and offered a change of scenery from the urban Alice Nestleton mysteries. The rural Dutchess County setting gives the books a different atmosphere — quieter, more pastoral, with the isolation of the countryside adding a layer of tension to the mysteries.
