The Debutante Dropout series by Susan McBride launched with Blue Blood in 2004. The books follow Andrea “Andy” Kendricks, a young Dallas woman who dropped out of the debutante scene much to her society-queen mother Cissy’s dismay. Despite her best efforts to live a quiet life as a web designer, Andy repeatedly finds herself tangled up in murder cases connected to the Dallas social world she tried to leave behind.
The six novels mix humor with mystery, playing the contrast between Andy’s down-to-earth personality and her mother’s high-society expectations for both laughs and plot complications. The series ran through 2015, ending with Say Yes to the Death. McBride’s writing keeps the tone light and breezy while delivering satisfying whodunits rooted in the culture of wealth and appearances in Texas.
