Debbie Rix is a former journalist who writes historical fiction based on the lives of real women. Five of her nine novels are set in Italy, and her stories often take place during World War II or other periods of European conflict. Historical accuracy matters to Rix, and she builds her plots around documented events and real people.
The Italian Girls (2020) follows two women in 1940s Italy, one a university student in the resistance and the other based on the real-life actress Maria Denis. The German Wife and The German Mother explore wartime Germany. Earlier novels like Daughters of the Silk Road and The Silk Weaver’s Wife draw on Italian history and the silk trade. The Secret Letter and The Photograph both deal with hidden wartime connections revealed decades later. Each novel is a standalone story, so they can be read in any order.
