Dead in the West (1986) is one of Lansdale’s earliest novels and a prime example of his genre-blending approach. A gunfighting preacher rides into Mud Creek, Texas, and finds the town under siege by the undead. The novella mixes western grit with zombie horror in a way that was unusual for the time.
The companion piece, Flinch #11 (2000), is a comic adaptation that revisits the same territory. Dead in the West remains a cult favorite among fans of weird westerns and horror fiction.
