“Days Without End” tells the story of Thomas McNulty, a young Irishman who flees the Famine and enlists in the U.S. Army, fighting in the Indian Wars and then the Civil War alongside his companion John Cole. The novel won the Costa Book of the Year in 2016 and earned Barry some of the widest international recognition of his career.
“A Thousand Moons” continues the story through the eyes of Winona, the Lakota child Thomas and John take in. Set in the aftermath of the war, it explores questions of belonging, identity, and what it means to make a home in a violent and uncertain world.
