The Davis Farm series gives Cynthia Voigt an opportunity to write from entirely non-human perspectives. Angus and Sadie (2005) follows two farm dogs and their relationship with each other and the humans they live with. Young Fredle (2011) zooms in much further — a mouse’s journey from the farmhouse kitchen to the outdoors and back — and Toaff’s Way (2018) follows a squirrel learning the geography and dangers of the farm’s surrounding environment.
Voigt writes the animals with genuine interiority — they have values, priorities, and fears that feel consistent with their species while still being emotionally accessible to young readers. The books are quieter than her adventure or mystery series, and work well for children who have a particular attachment to animal stories.
