David Walliams’ picture books bring his comic sensibility to stories for younger readers. The Slightly Annoying Elephant (2013) was his first, followed by The First Hippo on the Moon (2014) and many others through The Blunders (2023).
The fourteen picture books cover a wide range of silly premises. The Bear Who Went Boo! (2015) and There’s a Snake in My School (2016) play on the comedy of animals in wrong places, while Boogie Bear (2018) and The Creature Choir (2019) lean into musical humor. Marmalade: The Orange Panda (2022) and Grannysaurus (2022) show Walliams still finding fresh angles after nearly a decade of picture book work.
These books are aimed at a younger audience than his chapter books like Gangsta Granny and The Boy in the Dress. They are short, heavily illustrated, and designed for read-aloud sessions. Several have been illustrated by Tony Ross, whose loose, expressive drawings match Walliams’ comedic tone well.
