David Sodergren’s standalone novels are short, sharp horror stories that rarely overstay their welcome. Most clock in well under 300 pages, and several are closer to novella length. The approach works for his style: set up the characters, introduce the threat, and let the carnage unfold without a lot of padding.
The Forgotten Island (2018) established his template with a group of people trapped on an island with something horrible. Night Shoot (2019) put a film crew in danger during a late-night location shoot. The premises are deliberately simple, which lets Sodergren focus on pacing and atmosphere rather than complex plotting.
His more recent work has gotten bolder. And By God’s Hand You Shall Die (2023) and Rotten Tommy (2024) show a writer growing more confident in his voice while keeping the books lean. Sodergren doesn’t pad his novels to hit a page count, and readers who like their horror fast and mean will find plenty to enjoy here.
