The David Loogan series kicks off with Bad Things Happen, where a man calling himself David Loogan arrives in Ann Arbor and takes up editing a crime fiction magazine. When a murder occurs, Loogan becomes both a suspect and an investigator, and his hidden past makes everything more complicated. Very Bad Men and The Last Dead Girl continued the series with new cases and new revelations about Loogan’s background.
The Man in the Crooked Hat and The Good Killer round out the five-book sequence. Dolan’s plotting is tight, and he has a knack for making the reader question what they think they know. The series is a good choice for mystery readers who like their protagonists with some ambiguity built in.
