The Dark/Spark duology by James Alan Gardner is set in a world where, decades ago, the existence of supernatural creatures was revealed — and shortly after, ordinary people began gaining superpowers. Society now splits between Darklings (vampires, werewolves, demons) who control the wealthy elite, and Sparks (superheroes) who act as their counterbalance.
All Those Explosions Were Someone Else’s Fault (2017) follows a group of university students who accidentally gain Spark powers and must navigate a world of costumed heroes and supernatural politics. They Promised Me The Gun Wasn’t Loaded (2018) continues the story with a new narrator from the same group, maintaining the series’ blend of superhero action, humor, and social satire.
