The Dark Star trilogy is Marlon James’s epic fantasy series built on African mythology. Black Leopard, Red Wolf (2019) follows Tracker, a hunter with a supernatural sense of smell, on a quest to find a missing boy. Moon Witch, Spider King (2022) retells the same events from a different perspective. The series is dense, violent, and deliberately challenging, drawing comparisons to both Tolkien and Rashomon.
James won the Man Booker Prize in 2015 for A Brief History of Seven Killings before turning to fantasy. His prose in the Dark Star books is stream-of-consciousness at times, unreliable, and full of African folklore. The world-building pulls from multiple African traditions rather than the European medieval settings that dominate most fantasy fiction.
A third volume has not yet been announced with a firm release date. Each book can technically stand alone since the same events are retold from a different narrator, but reading both gives a fuller picture of how truth shifts depending on who is telling the story. These are not casual reads. Expect dense language, graphic violence, and long stretches that demand close attention.
