The Dark House duology — Welcome to the Dark House (2014) and Return to the Dark House (2015) — is Laurie Faria Stolarz’s most straightforwardly horror-inflected series. The premise is knowingly genre-savvy: a group of teenagers who love horror win a contest to stay in a house famous for its connection to a horror film franchise, and the experience turns out to be genuinely terrifying.
Stolarz leans into the horror movie logic deliberately, and the duology works partly as a thriller and partly as a commentary on horror fan culture. It is darker in tone than the Blue is for Nightmares series and aims at readers who want genuine suspense rather than paranormal romance.
Read Welcome to the Dark House first; Return to the Dark House picks up directly where it leaves off.
