Dark Eagle launched in 2024 with a straightforward premise: Rome’s legions get the history books, but the empire also ran small covert units that operated far outside the normal chain of command. The series follows Centurion Marcus Antonius Maecilius, whose career is destroyed by a false accusation and who ends up condemned to row as a galley slave before being offered an alternative — joining one of these shadow teams.
The series moves fast. Ten books appeared between 2024 and 2026, each sending Marcus and his unit into a different hostile environment: Germania, the eastern frontier, the empire’s contested border territories. Ashman strips back the political complexity that characterises his other Roman work and replaces it with tight mission-focused plotting — infiltration, extraction, survival. The format is closer to a thriller series set in ancient Rome than to traditional Roman historical fiction.
Dark Eagle has attracted readers who enjoy the pace of Lee Child or Vince Flynn but want the Roman world as their backdrop.
