Dan Abnett has written two original novels outside the licensed universes he is best known for. Triumff, published in 2009 by Angry Robot, is set in an alternate 1600s where the British Empire still uses magic alongside technology. The protagonist, Sir Rupert Triumff, is a sailor and adventurer caught up in court politics. The novel has a comic, swashbuckling tone distinct from Abnett’s military science fiction.
Embedded, published in 2010, takes a harder science fiction approach. It follows a journalist who volunteers to have a soldier’s mind copied into his own to report from a distant colony war. The book examines military journalism, identity, and the ethics of embedded reporting through a science fiction lens. Both novels received positive reviews from readers of his licensed work and demonstrate Abnett’s ability to write outside the constraints of franchise fiction.
