Daisy Goodwin has written three standalone novels, all rooted in historical settings and real people. My Last Duchess, released in the US as The American Heiress (2010), was her fiction debut. It follows Cora Cash, possibly the wealthiest heiress in 1890s America, as her socially ambitious mother steers her toward marriage with an English duke. The novel draws heavily on the true story of Consuelo Vanderbilt’s arranged marriage.
The Fortune Hunter (2013) is set in 1875 and centers on a love triangle between Charlotte Baird, a young woman more interested in photography than high society, Captain Bay Middleton, an impoverished but gifted horseman, and Empress Elizabeth of Austria. Diva (2024) shifts to the 20th century, telling the story of opera legend Maria Callas and her devastating affair with shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, which ended when Onassis married Jacqueline Kennedy.
