The Cruisers follows a group of kids at a Harlem magnet school who start an alternative newspaper. The five books, published between 2010 and 2013, cover their school experiences, friendships, and the social issues they encounter as young people in New York City.
Myers wrote the Cruisers books for middle-grade readers, and the series has the accessible, funny voice he brought to his younger-skewing work. At the same time, the stories do not shy away from real topics, using the school newspaper as a way for the characters to engage with the world around them.
