Crimson Empire marks James Mace’s first venture outside Ancient Rome and the colonial era. Broadswords over England (2026) is set during the Jacobite Uprising of 1745, when Charles Edward Stuart — Bonnie Prince Charlie — crossed from France to Scotland and attempted to reclaim the British crown for the House of Stuart.
The novel follows the campaign south into England and the eventual retreat that ended at Culloden. Mace’s connection to the period grew through his work as a script writer for the YouTube channel Redcoat History, and the Jacobite rebellion gave him a conflict with the kind of military detail and political complexity that defines his Roman novels.
