The Crazy Rich Asians trilogy by Kevin Kwan begins with Crazy Rich Asians (2013), where New Yorker Rachel Chu discovers her boyfriend Nick Young is heir to one of Singapore’s largest fortunes. What follows is a comedy of manners set among the ultra-wealthy families of Southeast Asia.
China Rich Girlfriend (2015) widens the scope to Hong Kong and mainland China, while Rich People Problems (2017) centers on a family inheritance battle. The first book was adapted into a 2018 film that grossed $240 million and became a cultural event as the first major Hollywood production with a predominantly Asian cast since The Joy Luck Club. Kwan optioned the film rights for one dollar after an early producer proposed making Rachel white.
