The Crayons series began with The Day the Crayons Quit (2013), a picture book told through letters from a box of crayons to their owner, Duncan. Each crayon has complaints — Red is overworked, Beige feels overlooked, and Peach is embarrassed about being naked since his wrapper fell off. The book, illustrated by Oliver Jeffers, became a #1 New York Times bestseller.
The franchise has grown to include The Day the Crayons Came Home, holiday-themed books (The Crayons’ Christmas, Happy Easter from the Crayons), and board books for younger readers. The core concept — giving personality and feelings to everyday objects — has proven endlessly adaptable.
