The Coyote series by Allen M. Steele spans eight novels published between 2002 and 2011. The series begins when a group of dissidents hijack a starship and flee a totalitarian United States to colonize Coyote, a habitable moon orbiting a gas giant in the 47 Ursae Majoris system. The first three books (Coyote, Coyote Rising, and Coyote Frontier) deal with the practical challenges of building a new society from scratch.
Later entries expand the scope considerably. Spindrift introduces alien contact, Galaxy Blues adds interstellar commerce, and Coyote Horizon and Coyote Destiny deal with the consequences of humanity joining a larger galactic community. Hex, the final novel, takes the story to its most ambitious setting yet. The series traces a full arc from desperate escape to interstellar civilization, and Steele handles the expansion of scale without losing the human-level storytelling that made the early books compelling.
