The Corner House series is set at the Marble Arch Lyons Corner House in London, one of the city’s busiest restaurants during the war years. Corner House Girls (2000) introduces the young waitresses, known as Nippies, as they serve customers against the backdrop of air raids, blackouts, and rationing. The women form close friendships as the war disrupts their personal lives and forces them into new roles.
Kiss the Girls Goodbye (2001) and PS I Love You (2002) carry the story forward through the middle years of the war, following the Nippies as they cope with separation, loss, and the daily challenge of keeping life going in a city under siege. The series draws on the same wartime Portsmouth and London settings that run through much of Harry’s work, and the Lyons Corner House gives her a distinctive workplace setting that brings together women from different backgrounds.
