The Connie Blair Mystery series features twelve books published between 1948 and 1958. Written by Betsy Allen (Betty Cavanna’s pen name), each book features a color in its title and follows teenager Connie Blair through a new mystery. From The Clue in Blue (1948) to The Mystery of the Ruby Queens (1958), the series was part of the midcentury wave of girl detective fiction that also produced Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden.
The color-themed titles give the series its distinctive look. Puzzle in Purple, The Riddle in Red, The Green Island Mystery, The Ghost Wore White, and Peril in Pink all use the same naming pattern. Several of the earlier titles have become collectible, and some are difficult to find outside of used book markets.
Connie Blair herself is a resourceful teenager with a knack for observation. The mysteries take her to different locations and situations, but the tone stays consistent with other girl detective series of the era. Readers who grew up on Nancy Drew or Cherry Ames will recognize the format immediately.
