Mothers and Sons and The Empty Family collect short stories that deal with many of the same concerns as Toibin’s novels. Family relationships, Irish emigration, and quiet personal crises are all recurring subjects. The Empty Family won the Edge Hill Short Story Prize in 2011.
Vinegar Hill: Poems marked Toibin’s first published poetry collection, drawing on his childhood in Enniscorthy. The News from Dublin, forthcoming in 2026, continues his work in short fiction.
