Colin Bateman’s nine standalone novels cover a wide range of tones and settings, though most share his characteristic blend of dark humor and crime. Cycle of Violence (1995) was his second published book and follows a journalist posted to the fictional town of Crossmaheart, where tensions run high. Empire State (1997) and Maid of the Mist (1999) take the action outside Northern Ireland, while Wild About Harry (2000) was adapted into a film.
Later standalones include Chapter and Verse (2003), I Predict a Riot (2007), and Orpheus Rising (2008). Orpheus Rising stands apart from the rest of Bateman’s work as a more serious novel, set in Florida and following a writer who returns to the place where his wife was murdered. Across all nine books, Bateman proves equally comfortable with straightforward crime, satirical comedy, and more personal stories.
