Code Name Delta is Oscar Ortiz’s spy thriller series, five books built in the tradition of Donald Hamilton’s Matt Helm novels and Ian Fleming’s Bond — a professional operative working through a private organization to eliminate threats that conventional intelligence services cannot or will not handle. Patrick Coonan is ex-military, technically precise, and morally clear about the work he does, which places the series in the classic mode of the spy who kills as a matter of professional competence rather than emotional complexity.
The Quadrille (2023) launched the series with Berkowitz’s network facing a mission against Soviet nuclear saboteurs, and the subsequent books moved Coonan across international settings: post-Cold War Russia in Red Goliath, Colombia in One Deadly Souk, Aruba in The Caribbean Sedition, and back to Colombia in The Magdalena Gambit (2025). The pace of publication — five books in three years — and the mission-based structure reflect the influence of the paperback original tradition both Fleming and Hamilton worked in.
Reading in publication order gives the clearest picture of Coonan as a character, though each mission is largely self-contained.
