The Clovenhoof series by Heide Goody and Iain Grant begins with a simple premise: Satan has been sacked. Charged with gross incompetence and stripped of his infernal powers, the former Prince of Hell is banished to a flat in suburban Birmingham under the name Jeremy Clovenhoof. What follows is a comedy about the devil learning to navigate modern life with the help (and hindrance) of his neighbors — Nerys Thomas, a competitive dater who lives upstairs, and Ben Kitchen, a mild-mannered bookshop owner next door.
The series spans twelve books published between 2012 and 2025, plus short story collections and specials. Each installment puts Clovenhoof in new absurd situations while poking fun at everything from British bureaucracy to reality television. The humor is warm rather than mean-spirited, built around the contrast between absolute evil and the petty frustrations of everyday life.
