The Clement series is Keith A. Pearson’s longest-running comedy project. Who Sent Clement? (2017) introduces the title character, an oddball whose arrival disrupts the lives of everyone around him. The humor comes from Clement himself, a man with no apparent self-awareness and an extraordinary talent for making situations worse. Wrong’un (2018) raises the stakes, Clawthorn (2018) moves the action to new territory, and Headcase (2020) brings the series to a close with four books.
Pearson writes Clement with real affection. Despite the character’s ability to cause disaster, there is something likeable about his complete lack of guile. The series works because Pearson populates it with grounded, recognizable people who react to Clement the way any reasonable person would, with disbelief, frustration, and the occasional grudging laugh. Fans of dry British comedy and characters who refuse to read the room will find a lot to enjoy here.
