David Poyer brings the same attention to naval detail that defines his modern military fiction to the American Civil War in this trilogy. Fire on the Waters (2001) opens the series during the early days of the conflict, and subsequent books follow characters on both sides of the war as it plays out on the water. Poyer researched the period extensively, and the ships, tactics, and daily life aboard wartime vessels feel grounded in historical fact.
The trilogy stands completely apart from Poyer’s other work. Readers who enjoy Patrick O’Brian or C.S. Forester but want an American setting will find these books worth their time. Each novel can be read independently, though reading them in order provides the best sense of the war’s progression.
