The Circle series is Ted Dekker’s best-known work and the foundation of his larger Books of History universe. The story follows Thomas Hunter, who discovers that every time he falls asleep in one world, he wakes up in another. In our world, he is racing to stop a deadly virus from wiping out civilization. In the “Other Earth,” he lives in a lush, colorful reality populated by the Forest People and threatened by an evil army led by the Horde.
Black, Red, and White were originally published in 2004, with Green arriving in 2009 as a book Dekker described as both “Book Zero and Book Four.” The series reads as a loop, with Green connecting the end back to the beginning. Most readers start with Black and read through to Green, but the circular structure gives re-reads a different feel.
The Circle series spawned several spin-off series within the Books of History Chronicles universe, including the Lost Books (a young adult series), the Paradise trilogy, and the Beyond the Circle duology. For readers new to Ted Dekker, this is generally the best place to start.
