The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant is the opening trilogy of Stephen R. Donaldson’s epic fantasy saga. Lord Foul’s Bane, The Illearth War, and The Power That Preserves were all published in 1977, establishing the story of Thomas Covenant — a bitter, isolated leper who finds himself in a magical world that treats him as a hero while he insists none of it is real.
The trilogy’s originality lies in its protagonist: Covenant is no noble swordsman but a deeply flawed man whose inability to trust the world around him drives much of the conflict. Gilden-Fire (1981) is a companion novella set during the events of The Illearth War, adding a scene that was cut from the original publication.
