Chronicles of the Necromancer was Gail Z. Martin’s debut fantasy series. The Summoner (2007) introduces Prince Martris Drayke, who flees for his life after his half-brother Jared murders their father and takes the throne. On the run, Tris discovers he has inherited a powerful gift: the ability to communicate with and command the spirits of the dead. He must learn to control this necromantic ability while gathering allies for a campaign to take back his kingdom.
The Blood King (2008) continues Tris’s training and the buildup to war, while Dark Haven (2009) and Dark Lady’s Chosen (2009) expand the world and the political conflicts surrounding the throne. The series generated a large amount of connected fiction, including the Fallen Kings sequel duology and the 24-book Jonmarc Vahanian Adventure short fiction series, which follows the backstory of one of the most popular characters introduced in The Summoner.
