The Christopher Redmayne series is set in London during the Restoration period, after the Great Fire of 1666 has left much of the city in ruins. Christopher Redmayne, a young architect involved in the rebuilding, teams up with Jonathan Bale, a sober Puritan constable, to investigate crimes among the upper classes. Their contrasting personalities, Christopher is sociable and aristocratic, Bale is stern and principled, drive the partnership.
Six books were published between 1999 and 2007, starting with The King’s Evil. The series uses the chaos and opportunity of post-fire London as its backdrop, with the rebuilding effort itself playing into several of the plots.
