China Mieville’s standalone short fiction includes some of his most inventive work. The Tain (2002) is a novella set in a post-apocalyptic London invaded by creatures from behind mirrors, drawing on the Jorge Luis Borges essay of the same name. Reports of Certain Events in London (2004) tells of streets that migrate through the city on their own.
These shorter works showcase Mieville’s ability to build strange, compelling worlds in compressed form, using the freedom of shorter fiction to push his ideas to their most unusual extremes.
