The Children of the Lamp series, written by Philip Kerr under the pen name P.B. Kerr, follows twelve-year-old twins John and Philippa Gaunt as they learn that they belong to a powerful family of djinn. After having their wisdom teeth removed, the twins begin to develop supernatural abilities, and their uncle Nimrod introduces them to a hidden world of wishes, ancient magic, and rival djinn tribes.
Each book sends the twins to a different part of the world, from ancient Egypt in The Akhenaten Adventure to the Himalayas in The Cobra King of Kathmandu. The series draws on mythology from multiple cultures and wraps it in a fast-moving adventure plot. Kerr brings the same dry wit he used in his adult novels to a younger audience, and the books balance humor with genuine suspense. The seven-book series ran from 2004 to 2011.
