The Childers Universe is one of Richard F. Weyand’s earliest and most popular series. It starts with Childers in 2017 and follows Jan Childers, a woman who escapes poverty on Earth by enlisting in the Commonwealth Space Force. Her rise through the ranks drives the first trilogy, while later books expand the universe to cover events that take place decades or even centuries before and after her story.
Weyand keeps the science plausible here. There is no artificial gravity or magical technology. Hyperspace and surgically implanted VR systems are the main innovations, and the author works through their implications in a way that feels thought-out rather than hand-waved. The series has about a hundred and fifty inhabited planets as its backdrop, giving plenty of room for the political and military conflicts that fill these books.
