Chicks in Chainmail is a long-running humorous fantasy anthology series edited by Esther M. Friesner and published by Baen Books. The premise is simple: short stories about female warriors, told with as much comedy as combat. The series became one of the most popular humorous fantasy anthologies of the 1990s and 2000s.
Beginning with Chicks Ahoy! in 1994, the series ran for eight volumes through 2015, with punning titles like Did You Say Chicks?!, Chicks ’n Chained Males, and Turn the Other Chick. Friesner recruited dozens of fantasy authors to contribute stories that skewer the genre’s treatment of women warriors while celebrating them at the same time. The final volume, Chicks and Balances, arrived over a decade after the previous entry, showing the lasting popularity of the concept.
