The Chet and Bernie Mysteries work because of their narrator. Chet is a dog, and he tells the story the way a dog would: distracted by smells, confused by human behavior, and fiercely loyal to his partner Bernie Little, a private investigator. Dog On It (2008) established the concept, and the series has run for fifteen books through A Farewell to Arfs (2024).
The dog’s-eye narration turns standard mystery conventions on their head. Chet notices things humans miss and misses things humans would catch, creating both comedy and genuine investigative insight. Punning titles like Thereby Hangs a Tail, The Sound and the Furry, Heart of Barkness, and Tender is the Bite signal the series’ playful tone while the plots deliver real mystery satisfaction.
