The Chesspocalypse novellas are part of Jeremy Robinson’s Jack Sigler / Chess Team universe, a military thriller series in which elite special operators are given chess-piece callsigns. In 2011, Robinson released a set of novellas that each focused on a different team member, co-written with a different author. David Wood partnered with Robinson on Callsign: Queen, which sends operative Zelda Baker to Pripyat, the abandoned city near Chernobyl, on a mission to find a missing teammate.
These are fast, focused military thrillers with a supernatural edge. The Chess Team deals with threats that go beyond ordinary terrorism, including ancient creatures and science-gone-wrong scenarios. Wood’s contribution fits naturally alongside his other work, combining military action with mysterious forces. For readers already familiar with Robinson’s Jack Sigler novels, the Chesspocalypse novellas fill in story gaps between the full-length books. For Wood fans, Callsign: Queen is a chance to see him work in someone else’s sandbox.
