Edward Cline’s Chess Hanrahan series has an unusual publication history: First Prize appeared in 1988, then more than two decades passed before Presence of Mind arrived in 2010. The series then continued in quick succession with Honors Due in 2011 and With Distinction in 2012.
Despite that long gap, reading from First Prize onward is the recommended approach. The titles suggest a connected thread running through all four books, and starting at the beginning gives the full arc of the Chess Hanrahan character across the series.
