The Charlotte Justice series consists of four novels published between 1999 and 2006. Detective Justice works homicides in Los Angeles, where the cases she investigates are shaped by the city’s racial fault lines, political corruption, and social inequality. Inner City Blues established the series with a story set in the aftermath of the 1992 riots.
Woods writes police procedurals that take the genre’s formula and infuses it with a specificity of place and perspective that most crime fiction misses. Charlotte Justice is a fully drawn character whose personal losses and professional ambitions create conflicts that go beyond the cases she solves.
