The Charlie Moon series by James D. Doss spans eighteen novels published between 1994 and 2012, set in and around the fictional town of Granite Creek in southwestern Colorado. The books follow Charlie Moon, a tall, easygoing Ute rancher who moonlights as an investigator, and his formidable Aunt Daisy, a traditional Ute shaman who claims regular contact with the spirit world.
Beginning with The Shaman Sings, the series weaves together conventional mystery plotting with elements drawn from Ute mythology and Southwestern folklore. Each novel features a new case that draws Moon away from his ranch and into the kind of trouble that requires both sharp detective instincts and an open mind about the unexplainable. Doss had a talent for balancing humor, cultural detail, and genuine suspense, and the series maintained a devoted readership throughout its run.
