Charles Walter Williams published poetry from 1917 until his death in 1945. His earliest collections, Poems of Conformity (1917), Divorce (1920), and Windows of Night (1924), are lyric poetry with religious and philosophical themes. Heroes & Kings (1930) marked a turn toward narrative and mythic subjects.
His most important poetic work is the Arthurian cycle. Taliessin Through Logres retells the Arthurian legend from the perspective of the Welsh bard Taliessin, weaving theology into the Matter of Britain. The companion work, The Region of the Summer Stars, extends the cycle. Several editions combine both poems: the 1974 edition adds C.S. Lewis’s unfinished commentary Arthurian Torso, and the 2016 edition brings the pair back into print. The Silver Stair (2011) is a reprint of an earlier collection. The Arthurian Poems of Charles Williams (1944) collects his Arthurian verse outside the two main cycles.
