Charles Walter Williams wrote verse plays throughout his career, most of them on religious subjects. Thomas Cranmer of Canterbury was commissioned for the Canterbury Festival in 1936, the year after T.S. Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral played the same venue. Williams’s drama shares Eliot’s interest in bringing theological ideas to the stage through poetic language.
His Christmas plays include The House by the Stable, Grab and Grace (its sequel), Seed of Adam, and The Death of Good Fortune. A Myth of Shakespeare and The Chapel of the Thorn draw on literary and Arthurian material. Many of these works were reprinted in 2018 as individual editions after years of limited availability. Collected Plays (1963) and Three Plays (2009) offer broader selections of his dramatic writing.
