The Chance “Cash” Register Working Stiff series is Kirk Alex’s most personal creation. Cash is a down-on-his-luck writer with an empty bank account and a bad attitude, pedaling his bike through the baking Tucson streets in search of any job that will keep a roof over his head. The series started in 2003 with Blood, Sweat and Chump Change, a book rooted in Alex’s own years of working menial jobs while trying to make it as a writer.
The later books pick up the thread of Cash’s life over the following decades. Nonentity arrived in 2005, and after a long gap, Paycheck to Paycheck and Loopy Soupy’s Motley Crew both came out in 2022. The series has a loose, episodic feel, mixing dark humor with genuine desperation. If you have ever worked a dead-end job while chasing something better, Cash’s struggles will feel uncomfortably familiar.
